One Trait That Separates Exceptional Campaigns from the Rest

When embarking on a capital campaign, a common question arises. What are the keys to success? In conducting hundreds of capital campaigns for churches, schools, social services and other organizations we have found one trait that separates exceptional campaigns from the rest. This one quality of a campaign can make the difference in who is engaged and how much you raise. It determines a positive experience for volunteers and staff and provides a cornerstone for success.

In a recent capital campaign, a couple had contributed a multi-million gift. When asked why that gift was given, they said because we wanted to see the project get done. The couple's commitment was built over years of engagement, communication and relationship building. However, the primary trait of the campaign receiving this large of a gift came from the fact that this couple chaired the campaign.
